Leadership Development, Business Strategy and Organizational Transformation Case Study

The Client

Our client, a business owner, found himself overwhelmed and under immense pressure. He was struggling with a constant worry of patient dissatisfaction, which contributed to self-doubt about his competence and worthiness. His workday had become a source of dread due to the challenges that seemed to arise endlessly, and retirement felt like an elusive oasis.

The Challenge

With his identity deeply entwined with his job, the client found it exceedingly difficult to manage his emotional responses effectively when confronted with irate or dissatisfied patients. This anxiety permeated his entire work life, turning even minor issues into major stressors. Furthermore, the constant worry about the potential for negative patient reactions exacerbated the client's overall stress, leading to burnout and the deterioration of workplace morale.

SKYL’s Strategy

We embarked on a year-long journey with the client, beginning with a comprehensive two-hour call that covered all aspects of his personal and professional life. Our strategy was centered around:

  1. Weekly Personalized Coaching: We set up weekly 30 to 45-minute sessions focused on tackling weekly challenges and identifying the root cause of the overwhelming feelings.
  2. Customized Communication Strategies: A key focus area was enhancing his communication skills, particularly with his team and himself. The client learned the value of asking clarifying questions instead of jumping to conclusions. This tactic aimed to reduce misunderstandings and foster an environment of open dialogue. He also learned the power of his inner voice and the importance of self-compassion.
  3. Work-Life Balance and Identity Separation: We worked with the client on recognizing the difference between their personal identity and their professional role.
  4. Brain Training Exercises: We introduced personalized brain training exercises designed to help manage anxious thoughts, prevent overthinking and ways for the client to support his team with similar exercises.
  5. Work-Life Balance and Future Planning: The ultimate goal was to restore work-life balance and help the client develop a concrete retirement and succession plan. By reducing work hours without compromising pay, the client could focus on succession planning and team congruence. They learned to delegate effectively and felt more comfortable making tough decisions.

Results

Within six months, the client experienced a significant reduction in workplace anxiety, achieved a healthier work-life balance, and gained clarity regarding his future. A year later, the client was not only able to maintain his income level despite reducing his working hours, but he also successfully navigated through a major transition when a potential partner had to leave unexpectedly. The client reported that he felt better equipped to manage the clinic, even in the face of unexpected challenges that reduced the impact on his personal life as well. To create sustainability, the client continues to check-in with SKYL Group every 4 months to re-evaluate present circumstances.

Beyond Leadership Coaching: We extended our coaching services to include the office manager, helping to navigate team transitions, build trust, and manage potential survivor guilt amongst the remaining employees.

Testimonial

"Everything felt hard. I dreaded work and wanted to walk away. It took time, but now I can handle much more without feeling overwhelmed. There are still days I don't like work, but it doesn't consume me anymore. I have the best team, and I want to support them the best I can. Now, I'm not rushing to retirement, but I have a plan that doesn't feel out of reach. I know I'm leaving a legacy where the team and patients will be cared for.”
